The day visitor is regional Victoria's summer opportunity

For hospitality, tourism and accommodation in regional Victoria · 3-minute read

In brief.

Victorians are spending more on day trips than a year ago, and less on nights away. Households are being careful after September's interest rate rise, but they're still going out. If you run a venue, an attraction or rooms in regional Victoria, plan this summer around the day visitor.

What are the 3 signals this week?

Day trips are growing.

In Victoria, day-trip spending rose 19.7% to $15.5 billion in the year to June 2026. Overnight spending fell 2.8% to $23.5 billion. (Tourism Research Australia figures, published by the Victorian Government, 30 September 2026)

People are still eating out.

Spending at hotels, cafes and restaurants rose 0.8% in August across Australia, and 0.2% in Victoria. Total household spending stood still nationally and fell 0.4% in Victoria. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 29 September 2026)

Households are being careful.

The Westpac–Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index fell 4.7% to 80.4 in October, where under 100 means pessimists outnumber optimists. It was lower again among people surveyed after the Reserve Bank lifted the cash rate to 4.60%. (Westpac, 6 October 2026; Reserve Bank, 29 September 2026)

What does it mean for hospitality, tourism and accommodation in regional Victoria?

Households are being careful, and they look to be spending closer to home. With petrol back over $2.30 a litre and mortgage costs rising, a day out is easier to say yes to than a weekend away.

Three dates matter: Melbourne Cup week from 2 November, the end of school on 18 December, and the return on 27 January. On current figures, more of your summer visitors are likely to come for the day.

For venues and attractions, that's an opening: be easy to find, and clear about why you're worth the drive. For accommodation, it's a chance to give the day visitor a reason to stay the night.

What is 1 move to make in the next 7 days?

Area: Story

Find out whether your team can say why someone should drive to you for the day. When they agree, your visitors hear one clear reason. It takes about half an hour.

  1. Ask three of your team, separately, to finish this sentence: “People drive here for the day because…”
  2. Put the three answers side by side. Where they match, you have your line. Where they don't, you've found the conversation to have.
  3. Put the agreed line where a day visitor decides: the first screen of your website and your Google Business Profile.

A question to take to your team: “If a family had one day and one tank of fuel, why would they spend it with us?”

If your summer is already full, keep this one for autumn. Not in hospitality? Try “People choose us because…”

What we do not know

The travel figures cover all of Victoria, Melbourne included, and stop at June, before September's rate rise. The spending figures are in dollars, so part of each rise is higher prices. Recreation and culture spending fell 1.4% in August, so not every kind of outing is growing. ANZ's economists say a November rate rise is more likely than not, and would probably weigh on spending. We'll return to this in January, with the travel figures due on 16 December.
